SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE WORKPLACE
WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?
Socially and emotionally intelligence is the ability to be aware of our own emotions and those of others, at the moment, and to use that information to manage ourselves and our relationships. Researchers have shown that success in work and life is driven far more by social and emotional intelligence (SEQ) than by cognitive intelligence (IQ). Interestingly, while IQ remains quite fixed from birth, SEQ can be learned. Studies indicate that the best way to enhance social and emotional intelligence (S+EI) skills is through coaching.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
As a Social and Emotional Intelligence (S+EI) Certified Coach, I offer three possibilities regarding S+EI coaching:
- Individual assessment:
I assess S+EI skills using the most comprehensive S+EI assessment instrument on the market today, the S+EI profile (SEIP) measuring 26 distinct competencies (based on the work of Drs. Reuven Bar-On, Daniel Goleman and Robert Cooper). This gives us an immediate insight into your strengths and potential vulnerabilities when it comes to social and emotional intelligence, allowing us to target the most important areas for development first… Click here to see the four-quadrant model assessment.
Once we have identified strengths and weaknesses in S+EI, we work to create a development plan for strengthening your emotional intelligence. Over the course of several sessions I provide you with tools to increase your own self‐awareness, awareness of others, as well as the tools you need to manage your emotional and behavioural responses in challenging situations.
- 360° Assessment
This is a technique which involves assessment of you by those around you, your superiors, your peers and your subordinates using the SEIP.
You select the individuals from whom you would like honest feedback and I will send them the assessment form to be completed. The results are private to you and me and will be analyzed by us together as part of the individual or team coaching process.
- Workshop in S+EI:
This workshop is based on Coaching techniques, where the participants will learn by doing.
Conflict and stress management, for example is one of these competences concerning the capacity of managing relationships with others. Nevertheless, to be able to manage relationships, the person has to be first aware of her/his own emotions and thoughts. The person needs to develop self-awareness. Therefore, it is essential to start developing self-awareness to continue working with the different possibilities to manage the situation and solve the conflict.
Therefore, the workshops cover two parts:
– Being aware of the mental process we are going through when we experience an adversity (stress, conflict relationships, etc).
– Managing: Once you we are aware of the process, we can decide the best behaviour.
IN HOW LONG?
The individual and 360° Assessment is part of a Coaching process. Therefore, the duration depends on your objective and the personal effort you make. However, it is not a question of an indefinite time.
The workshop last from three/four hours to one day.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
When there is a lack of S+EI, there are negative consequences:
– You can be unproductive because of the consequences of your negative behaviour;
– The working climate created is not positive and can affect your professional relationships and the general functioning of your team and system.
The main benefits of being aware of emotions and managing them are:
- Job satisfaction;
- Stable team;
- Conflict resolution.
The individual will have better health and healthier relationships, and the Institution will gain in a better work climate; service satisfaction and higher output in terms of results.
